Microsoft IT wanted to 1-up their new hire orientation (NEO). The Request: Gamify the training experience to add some fun while promoting healthy competition among new employees.
My challenge was to transform a series of training PowerPoint modules into a roleplaying adventure. The concept was based on a loose script provided by the client, where Master Trey of the Lakeside (a strikingly similar Bill Gates look-alike), leads the player through various challenges. Upon completing each module, an artifact related to the history of Microsoft, as well as gold coins, were awarded.
I designed both the initial storyboards as well as the game artwork. Custom sprites were added as hotspots for the challenges and trivia. The entire game engine was built and animated using HTML5, making it both flexible and accessible. Our development team designed and built a database to record and rank high scores. A player could also import their own Xbox avatar to further add a personal touch to their experience.
The game garnered much praise within Microsoft and was showcased at their fall IT conference.
